According to the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, the average building uses more than 1,000 pounds of chemical product for finishing, stripping and restoring every 50,000 square feet of hard-surface floors each year. Of that amount, approximately 19 percent is considered to be hazardous material that is harmful to people and the environment. In most cases, all of that product is stripped from the floors and discarded down the drain.
In addition to the typical amount of chemical waste, conventional floor finishing requires many gallons of water, countless hours of energy to run buffing and stripping machines, and many buffing and stripping pads that become worn out and discarded as solid waste.
While a floor finish or stripper product may be certified as “green” because the harmful toxins and metals have been removed, the maintenance and care associated with these products is still extremely wasteful and detrimental to the environment.
Buffing and burnishing a wax floor finish to restore the shine and prolong the life creates airborne dust particles that are spread around the building through the air-handling systems. All of the contaminants and dirt that were once just on the floor are now spread to multiple surfaces.
